The Murano Lighthouse, Venice

Arriving to Murano with the vaporetto, the first thing you see from a distance is an old lighthouse, a beautiful lighthouse.

However, it is not as old as I thought…

There has been a lighthouse in Murano since many centuries. For a long time it was a simple wooden tower with a fire on top and to increase the light intensity, it was reflected in some mirrors. At the beginning of the 20th century the wooden tower was replaced by an iron one.

It was only in 1934 that the current lighthouse was built. Istria stone was used for its construction, thanks to which it has that magnificent white colour that characterises it.

Just another of Venice’s wonders.
